At the far south of the Vercors, nestled in the heart of the magnificent Drôme valley, lies a gem tucked at the foot of cliffs: the Diois, named after the small town of Die.
Here, it already feels like the south, and the contrast is striking as you travel just a few kilometres and hundreds of metres of elevation, from wild plateaus with an almost polar atmosphere — where you might have been snowshoeing among wolves just moments before — to the nearly Mediterranean warmth of a sunny café terrace beneath plane trees, with lavender fields preparing to emerge from winter on the horizon.
The Diois is clearly an outdoor sports paradise: mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, canyoning, climbing, via ferrata, caving, paragliding… The range of possible activities is incredible, from the easiest to the most demanding, all within less than an hour from the railway station, and open year-round.
For nature enthusiasts, biodiversity lovers will be in their element and can settle in with binoculars to observe animal species that have recently returned like the griffon vulture, the beaver, the bearded vulture, or the white-tailed eagle. Or venture out with herbalist guides and sketchbooks in hand, searching for magnificent wild tulips, lady's slippers, or peony.
Goat's milk Picodons cheese, lavender honey, walnut oil, craft beers, and Châtillon wines are just some of the gastronomic treasures to discover or rediscover.
The Diois is also a hub of ecology and alternative living, with nearly three-quarters of cultivated land in organic farming, making it an emblematic territory of organic agriculture for several decades and a space for extraordinarily rich social experimentation. Here, people are inventing a different future, and many who pass through decide never to leave.
In short, you've got it: at Hunawé, we're completely charmed by this endearing little territory, and we're committed to making you fall in love with it too.
