What to See
The village is organized around a few stone alleyways, a Romanesque church, and traditional chalets. The view of the north face of the Meije (3,984 m) dominates permanently. In winter, snow-covered slopes descend directly toward the village. In summer, the glaciers of the Meije and Râteau offer a striking glacial panorama from the heights.
History and Context
La Grave is tied to the history of French mountaineering. The Meije was one of the last great Alpine peaks to be conquered: its main summit was not reached until 1877 by Emmanuel Boileau de Castelnau, guided by Pierre Gaspard père. The village long survived on livestock raising and the passage of travelers using the Col du Lautaret. The boom in high altitude skiing in the second half of the twentieth century transformed its economy.
Visit Highlights
The Cable Car and Off-Piste Domain
La Grave's cable car is an institution in the world of extreme skiing. It climbs in two sections toward the Girose glacier. The unmarked descents, spanning several kilometers of vertical drop, are reserved for experienced skiers accompanied by a guide.
The View of the Meije
From the village or the heights, the north face of the Meije stands as one of France's most impressive Alpine panoramas. The suspended glaciers and rocky ridges form a permanent mineral backdrop.
Saint-Hilarion Church
In the heart of the village, this gray stone Romanesque church dates partly from the Middle Ages. Its squat bell tower and sober interior bear witness to the rural religious architecture of the Hautes-Alpes.
Summer Hikes Toward the Glaciers
In summer, several marked routes allow you to approach the glaciers of the Meije and Râteau. The Promontoire refuge, departure point for climbing routes on the Meije, is accessible to experienced hikers.
Photography Tips
Morning light directly illuminates the north face of the Meije from the village. In winter, fresh snow after a fall offers strong contrasts between blue glaciers and dark rock. In summer, the golden hour in late afternoon reveals details of the rocky ridges. From the cable car, plunging views over the Romanche valley are particularly striking.
