Perched on the Vercors plateau some thirty kilometers from Grenoble, Lans-en-Vercors is a mountain village nestled among alpine pastures, coniferous forests and limestone cliffs—ideal for summer hiking and winter cross-country skiing.

Lans-en-Vercors is a mountain village located on the Vercors plateau, about thirty kilometers from Grenoble. At approximately 1,020 meters elevation, it combines open meadows, coniferous forests and limestone cliffs characteristic of the massif. A family-friendly destination year-round, it serves as a gateway to the Vercors Regional Natural Park and its hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes.

Practical information at a glance

  • Access from Grenoble: D531 road via Sassenage and the Gorges de la Bourne; approximately 30 km.
  • Public transport: regular bus connections from Grenoble (Transisère network).
  • Altitude: approximately 1,020 m at the village, with climbs possible to 1,400-1,500 m on nearby ridges.
  • Recommended duration: one day for an excursion, two to three days to explore trails and surroundings.
  • Equipment: hiking boots in summer, appropriate winter gear (snow chains or winter tires) from November to March.

What to see

The plateau offers unobstructed views of the Vercors ridges and, on clear days, of the Belledonne massif. The village retains modest mountain architecture: stone farmhouses with steeply pitched roofs. Around it, alpine pastures alternate with fir and spruce forests. In winter, the Vercors cross-country skiing network—one of the most extensive in France—departs directly from the village.

History and context

The Vercors is inseparable from the French Resistance. In 1944, the plateau was the site of intense fighting: the Vercors resistance movement attempted to establish a free zone before being crushed by German forces in July 1944. Lans-en-Vercors and its surroundings still carry the memory of these events, commemorated by several monuments and museums throughout the massif.

Highlights of a visit

Hiking on the plateau

Marked trails depart from the village toward the Rochers de Lans and ridges overlooking the Isère valley. Views of Grenoble and the Alps open up progressively as you gain elevation. The paths are passable from May to October without technical equipment.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing

The Vercors Nordic domain connects Lans-en-Vercors to neighboring resorts Villard-de-Lans and Corrençon-en-Vercors. Cross-country skiing trails extend for several dozen kilometers. Snowshoeing routes lead to isolated clearings and viewpoints overlooking limestone cliffs.

Gorges de la Bourne

The access road from Grenoble runs alongside the Gorges de la Bourne, a spectacular limestone canyon carved by the river. Several viewpoints allow you to stop and observe the rock faces and vegetation clinging to the cliffs.

Photography tips

Morning light is ideal on the alpine pastures, before valley mist rises. In winter, snow-laden firs and the plateau's white expanses offer clean compositions. For panoramas of Grenoble and Belledonne, climb the ridges in late afternoon when low-angle light emphasizes relief.
